BioGold in Uganda: a university-community partnership testing what safer artisanal gold actually costs

A three-year research partnership led by Kyambogo University is working directly with artisanal mining communities on mercury-free processing. The early lesson is that formalisation costs money someone has to fund.

Announced by Kyambogo University in late July, the BioGold Project is a three-year research partnership supported by the Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development. It coordinates Kyambogo with Makerere and Gulu universities and European partners, and it does something the sector has been slow to do: place the research team on the pit floor alongside the people using mercury.

Why a university partnership matters here

Uganda has no shortage of formalisation initiatives. planetGOLD runs site-level work on mercury-free technology, the GEF-backed GOLD+ programme funds traceability, and Solidaridad has documented the licensing milestones reached earlier this year. What has been missing is independent measurement of whether the substitute technologies hold up under real production pressure, at real recovery rates, with operators who cannot afford a bad month.

Safer processing is not a knowledge problem. It is a working-capital problem wearing a knowledge problem's clothes.

The cost nobody itemises

Mercury amalgamation persists because it is cheap, portable and needs no capital equipment. Gravity concentration, retorts and borax routes each require upfront spend, maintenance and training time that comes out of production. Unless a buyer, cooperative or licence holder absorbs part of that cost, the substitution does not survive contact with a low-grade week.

Community impact is measured in who keeps the gain

The projects that hold are the ones where the community retains equipment, skills and a licence rather than hosting a demonstration. That is the test we apply across our audits, and it is why we rate operators on reinvestment rather than announcements. Our assessment

BioGold is credible because it is independent, multi-institution and long enough to publish outcomes rather than intentions. We rate it 4.2 out of 5, with the reservation that research funding ends and the financing gap it documents will still be there in 2029 unless buyers take on part of the cost.
