European funds lead a return to gold ETFs

July brought net inflows of about three billion dollars, lifting global holdings by 23 tonnes. The composition of the flow is more interesting than the total.

Global gold backed exchange traded funds took in about three billion dollars of net new money in July, reversing two consecutive months of outflows. Collective holdings rose by 23 tonnes to 4,068 tonnes and assets under management climbed one per cent to roughly 530 billion dollars. European funds led the move, which is the detail that deserves attention.

Why the European lead is the signal

North American flows have driven most of the ETF story in recent years, and they tend to be tactical: fast in, fast out, closely tied to the rate narrative. European allocations behave differently. They skew toward pension and insurance mandates and multi-asset portfolios where gold enters as a strategic hedge rather than a rate trade. When that base of buyers moves, it usually stays moved for longer than a single quarter.

The awkward part

Liquidity across the gold complex continued to thin through July, with trading activity easing in every major segment. A market that is rallying on lower volume is more susceptible to sharp reversals, because there is less depth on the other side when sentiment turns. Three billion dollars is a healthy month, but it does not undo the heavier second-quarter selling, and holdings remain below the highs set earlier in the cycle.

What we are watching

Whether European inflows persist into September when institutional rebalancing typically resumes, whether North American funds join the bid or keep fading it, and whether liquidity recovers from the summer lull. Flows that broaden across regions turn a rebound into a trend. Flows concentrated in one region are a preference, not yet a consensus.
